1. Choose the right hospital
In big cities, prioritize the international departments of top public hospitals (such as Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Huashan Hospital, Ruijin Hospital) or international hospitals (such as United Family Healthcare, Parkway). They offer English service and accept international insurance direct billing, but the fees are higher. In remote areas, you can only go to the local public hospital — the fees are lower, but the language barrier and environment are more challenging.
2. Payment and reimbursement
For routine outpatient care, you may pay registration, examination, test and medication charges as you move through the hospital. Inpatient treatment may require a deposit. With a reimbursement-based policy, pay the eligible costs, collect the required documents and submit a claim afterwards. A fixed-benefit policy may instead pay a set amount when its stated conditions are met.
3. Insurance direct billing
Some international hospitals and international departments support direct billing with selected insurers. Availability depends on the policy, hospital network and authorization requirements, so check these terms before travel rather than assuming every hospital can bill your insurer directly.
4. Document and receipt flow
Save every receipt, diagnosis certificate, prescription, discharge summary and examination report — these are required for the claim. Photograph the originals as a backup in case they're lost. If admitted, request an English version of the hospitalization summary (some hospitals can provide it upon request).
5. Language help
Many ordinary hospitals have limited English support. A translation app, a bilingual companion or help from hotel staff can make registration and communication easier. Some insurers also include translation or hospital-finding assistance.
For a claim, keep itemized bills, official receipts, diagnosis certificates, prescriptions, test reports and any discharge summary. Photograph the originals as a backup and follow your insurer's submission requirements.
